Standing Seam Ridge Caps & Trim

Custom-fabricated ridge caps, hip caps and trim for standing seam roofing crews — profiles, gauges and how to order.

On a standing seam roof, the ridge is where the finish detail is judged. A ridge cap that lines up with the panel ribs, seals cleanly and holds a crisp line makes the whole roof read as a professional install. A stock cap that’s the wrong width, the wrong color or has the wrong leg length fights you at every rib. This guide covers the ridge cap and trim profiles we brake-form to order for roofing crews and builders nationwide, plus exactly what to send so your quote comes back fast and accurate.

What a ridge cap has to do

A standing seam ridge cap closes the gap at the peak where two panel planes meet, sheds water, and — on a vented assembly — lets warm attic air escape while keeping weather out. It has to span the panel ribs, seal against the panel or a closure, and match the roof’s finish. Hip caps do the same job on a diagonal. Because panel profiles, seam heights and pitches vary from job to job, a ridge cap is rarely a true off-the-shelf part — it’s a trim piece that should be fabricated to the roof it’s going on.

Profiles we fabricate

  • Standard ridge cap: a formed cap with two legs and a peak bend sized to your pitch, with the face height and leg length set to cover the seam and lap the panel.
  • Vented ridge cap: a taller or offset profile designed to work with a ridge vent or closure so the assembly breathes; specify your vent product and we’ll form to suit.
  • Hip caps & transitions: caps and trims for hips, pitch changes and roof-to-wall junctions, formed to the angle you give us.
  • Custom & matching: if you’re matching an existing roof or a specific panel system, send a cross-section or a sample and we’ll replicate the legs, hems and face height.

If you already spec trim on your jobs, our guide to spec’ing trim & flashing walks through the same drawing-and-dimensions approach we use for ridge work.

Material & gauge

Ridge caps and trim should match the panels they cap. We fabricate in both steel and aluminum:

  • Steel: commonly the same gauge family as the roof panels so the cap holds a straight line over a long run — typically painted 24 or 26 gauge for architectural standing seam work.
  • Aluminum: a corrosion-resistant option for coastal or high-humidity jobs, run in painted stock to match the panel finish.

The right gauge follows the run length, wind exposure and the panel it’s matching. If you’re weighing the two, our aluminum vs. steel comparison lays out the trade-offs.

Hems, cleats & attachment

Detailing is what separates a cap that lasts from one that oil-cans or lifts. Hemmed legs (a folded-back edge) add rigidity and remove the raw cut edge; specify hemmed or open. Depending on the system, ridge caps are set over closures with sealant tape, fastened through the ribs, or engaged with a concealed cleat for a fastener-free face. Tell us the attachment method your crew uses and we’ll form the legs and hems to suit it. For the eave side of the same roof, we also fabricate matching eave and drip edge trim so the whole roof ties together.

Finish & color match

The cap should disappear into the roof, not stand out. We fabricate from painted coil so your ridge, hip and trim match the panel color rather than settling for whatever’s in stock. Send the panel manufacturer and color name if you have it, or browse our Color Options and request the current color chart with your quote.

Lengths, tolerances & matching the panel

We brake-form to order in custom lengths, so long ridge runs mean fewer laps, cleaner lines and less labor on the peak. For an accurate part, give us the roof pitch (so the peak bend is correct), the panel profile or seam height the cap has to clear, the leg lengths and face height, and whether it’s vented. Matching an existing detail? A physical sample or a dimensioned cross-section is the most reliable reference we can work from.

How to order

Send these five things and your quote comes back fast and accurate:

  • Profile & pitch: a drawing, photo or sample of the cap, plus the roof pitch and panel/seam it caps.
  • Dimensions: leg lengths, face height, peak angle and whether legs are hemmed.
  • Material, gauge & color: steel or aluminum, the gauge, and the finish to match your panels.
  • Lengths & quantity: piece lengths and total run — volume affects pricing.
  • Timeline: when you need it on site; we fabricate to order and confirm a lead time with your quote.
